Rupert Ravens is an intuitive curator, collector, artist, writer, lecturer and passionate patron of the visual arts. In 2006, following two years as a consultant for the Newark Arts Council, where he curated the widely acclaimed "Newark Between Us", he opened Rupert Ravens Contemporary, the largest commercial fine arts gallery under one roof in North America @ 30,000 sq ft. Up until it's closing in 2013 RRC presented over 360 artists in biennial style exhibitions, including 85 solo projects.
He was nominated by the International Association of Art Critics, for BEST SHOW IN A COMMERCIAL GALLERY NATIONALLY in 2009. Mr. Ravens has received recognition from the NEW YORK TIMES, NY DAILY NEWS, NY POST, FLASH ART International (Italy), GQ (Italy), ART.ES (Madrid -8 page joint interview with Newark Mayor Cory Booker), SHORT HILLS Magazine (12 page photo spread), TIME OUT, WHITE HOT, STAR LEDGER (Top Ten Shows of NY), SCULPTURE Magazine, HAUTE LIVING, and the ART NEWSPAPER, along with multiple blogs, including ARTCAT, KiptonART, NewarkUSA and Glocally Newark. Additionally, he has been covered by the James Kalm Report Artforum's online video channel.
Mr. Ravens has showcased artists in 4 large original venues in as many years, during Art Basel Miami Beach, garnering Top Ten accolades for his curating and installations in Culture Catch, dART International (Toronto), NY Arts Magazine, and the Brooklyn Rail, who selected his presentations as cutting-edge art events.
Ravens' shows embody acrobatic physics that electrify the space he orchestrates. He has attracted national corporate sponsors for these productions, in addition to generating substantial grants and awards from NYFA, NAC, Prudential, and private foundations.
In 2005, Mr. Ravens mounted a historic retrospective exhibition of R. Buckminster Fuller's "Ideas + Inventions", at the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville, NC.
He champions the artwork of divergent ethnic backgrounds and continues to promote the revitalization of communities in need.
